Foster Program

Become a Foster Parent!
Foster Me!
Animals at our shelter need you.

What is Foster Care?

Some animals thrive in a home environment rather than the stressful environment of the shelter. We call on our foster families to help nurse animals back to health and/or give them the socialization that they need.

Who would I Foster?

There are different foster categories. You decide who you would like to foster. You can help with:

  • A mother who is about to give birth or who is nursing young.
By giving the mother a calm, loving environment, she will feel comfortable enough to give birth or raise her litter.

  • Underage Animals
are the most common. They need time to build their immunity, gain weight and socialize so they can be ready for their forever home.

  • Older, injured or sick animals
who may need medication, time to heal, gain weight or just need some extra love before they are offered for adoption.

  • How Long Do I Foster?

It varies on the animal's situation Ideally we prefer underage animals to be at least 8 weeks of age and over 2.5 pounds and well socialized and healthy. At the time of the check-up, if the animal is shy of the weight requirement, we would like them to remain in foster care. Older, injured or sick animals, depending on what they are being fostered for, could be fostered anywhere from 2 weeks to 2 months.

What do we expect from Foster Families?

Foster Families provide temporary homes for shelter animals. We expect Foster Families to provide the animal they are care-giving with love, shelter, food and water and monitor their health. We have a veterinarian on staff and require that we are notified of any health issues.

Being a Foster Family helps the Humane Society by giving certain animals much-needed time away from the shelter's chaotic surroundings. It also helps free up precious kennel space while the animal is becoming healthy and adoptable.

When you become a Foster Parent for HIHS, we contact you to discuss an animal needing to be fostered. You can decide to take on the responsibility of fostering on a case-by-case basis.
