Animal Welfare Groups on the Big Island

Animal Rescue Coalition of Hawaii 987-ARCH
ARCH was formed in 1999 on the Big Island and operates mainly in the Waimea area. Their mission is to “promote the welfare of dogs and cats on the Island of Hawaii, and eliminate all unnecessary euthanization through innovative spay/neuter incentives, adoption support, and public education.” They were formed SPECIFICALLY to assist HIHS in addressing the pet overpopulation here. ARCH assists us with the foster care program, posts adoptable animals on their website, www.archawaii.org, and operates an educational program. Currently they are an all-volunteer organization. There is no physical shelter.

AdvoCats 327-3724

AdvoCats is an all-volunteer organization based in Kona and operating mainly on the West side of the island. AdvoCats was set up to address the extensive feral cat problem on our island. This organization supports the Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) program that has been so successful in many communities on the mainland and made popular by national organization Alley Cat Allies. TNR colonies are set up by cat caretakers whose responsibility it is to trap the cats, have sick cats euthanized, healthy cats vaccinated and sterilized, and then return the cats to the colony where they will keep new cats from entering the area. Caretakers feed the colony and address problems in the colony. HIHS supports TNR colonies. If any “tipped ear” (sterilized) cats are brought into the shelter, AdvoCats is contacted and a representative redeems that cat.

Cat-Care/The Cat House 985-8882

Former HIHS board member Cat Killam and her husband, Kent, long dreamt of a foundation that would assist the homeless cats of their area. The formed Cat-Care in the mid-1990’s and in 2001 their “cat house” became fully functional. The cat house houses approximately 40 cats and most are available for adoption. Almost all of the cats were adopted from the Keaau shelter. The cat house is located just outside Volcano and is not open to the public, but accessible only through a pre-arranged appointment with the Killams. Cat earns most of the operating funds for the cat house through her massage business and donations from tourists.

Rainbow Friends Animal Sanctuary 982-5110

Located on 11 acres in Mountain View on the East side of the Island, Rainbow Friends is a true “no-kill” sanctuary for dogs and cats. Founders Lanny and Mary Rose Sinkin based the plan for their shelter on the famous Best Friends animal sanctuary in Utah. All animals are tested for disease and vaccinated before they can enter the shelter. The Sinkins are very stringent in their adoption procedures and work hard to ensure a perfect match before they release any of their animals. Rainbow Friends is a limited-admissions shelter as they must turn away animals when space is unavailable.

Three Ring Ranch 331-8778
Ann Goody, experienced animal trainer and caretaker, set up an exotic animal sanctuary in Kona in 2000. She is an amnesty station for illegal animals and provides care for a number of unusual creatures, including oryx, zebras, cranes, flamingoes, llamas and others. Ann helps HIHS by taking in exotics that we are unable to care for and rehabilitating native species so they can be released back into the wild.
