Adoption During COVID-19

Adoption During COVID-19

As part of our mission to enhance the bond between humans and animals, our adoption program is vital to our lifesaving efforts and supporting our pets. Due to the COVID-19 crisis, and in an effort to take care of our staff and the community, our shelters are closed to the public. We are continuing to provide essential services. Unfortunately, we are unable to permit interested adopters into our shelters to ''browse'' our animals, but our commitment to you and our animals remains. We are proud to introduce our Foster to Adopt program for interested adopters.

Through Foser to Adopt, you will have up to 14 days to spend time with a shelter pet in the comfort of your home. During that time, the shelter pet will have the opportunity to decompress from life in the shelter and you'll get to know the pet to determine if he/she is your new best friend!

To get started:

1. Check out our adoptable pets!

2. Apply to Foster to Adopt (required.)

After we receive your application, a member of our team will contact you to discuss your application, reserve your pet, and schedule pick up.

*Please note, Foster to Adopt pick-ups are BY APPOINTMENT ONLY. We are not permitting the public into our shelters. Please do not come to our shelters without an appointment. We will be in touch!

Terms of our Foster to Adopt program:

1. Foster to Adopt is for those strictly looking to ADOPT.
2. With consideration to the well being of our animals, and the capacity of our staff, Foster to Adopt is not meant to be a series of serial trial runs. We ask that those committing to adopt are serious in their interest and work with our adoption counselors, prior to bringing an animal home, to make a good match for you and your family.
3. Foster to Adopt families and individuals will be given a maximum of 2 weeks to spend with their Foster to Adopt pet, prior to being asked to either adopt that animal, return the animal to shelter, or continue fostering the animal with the intention to allow someone else to adopt the pet.
4. While in Foster to Adopt homes, pets remain the legal and financial responsibility of Hawaii Island Humane Society, until such a time that the animal is adopted.
5. All pets must be spayed or neutered, and microchipped prior to leaving the shelter. If the pet you are interested in bringing home is not yet spayed or neutered, we will schedule them for surgery and schedule a time for you to pick up the pet from our shelter.
6. As soon as you know that you are ready to adopt, just let our team know! We can easily process your adoption over the phone, with credit card payment.

Adoption Fees (includes spay/neuter, microchip, vaccines.)
$80 for Dogs and Puppies
$65 for Cats and Kittens
*Senior citizen discounts available*

In order to help our adoption counselors help you find your new best friend, please provide as much information as possible.
